Net Stop--Notes

Stop a service to halt the function it performs and to remove the software from memory.

Stopping the Server service prevents users from accessing the computer's shared resources. If you stop the Server service when users are accessing resources, Windows NT displays a warning message, requesting confirmation that you want to cancel the connections. A y response cancels all connections to the computer.

Before stopping the Server service, you can:

ntcmds00000002.gif Pause the service (to disallow new connections).

ntcmds00000002.gif Send a message advising users to disconnect from the server's resources.

Net stop can also stop network services not provided with Windows NT.
